Local community unites for Ukraine
Following an urgent appeal from the local community, a contact at Barnet Council approached Young Barnet Foundation for advice and support regarding local community effort to help Ukraine refugees in Romania.
We teamed up with Barnet Food Hub and worked with partners and suppliers to gather vital food supplies for refugees arriving in Romania from Ukraine.
The Romanian Foodbank, managed by the Romanian Culture and Charity Together, collected donations from local residents which were flown out by private plane from Stansted to Suceava in Eastern Romania where, in liaison with Youth with a Mission charity, they were distributed to those most in need.
Working with Volunteers on Wheels, Young Barnet Foundation and Barnet Food Hub were able to source and deliver pallets of much-needed baby food and long-life food with the support of partners from across London including Ishraq from Human Appeal in Bounds Green, Aytac Food, and Go Dharmic.
The story was covered by BBC London News (see the video of the report below) and Big Jet TV streamed the flight on their YouTube channel. You can watch an interview with John and Amy Matthews from AirX talking about the donation drive here: https://youtu.be/kxuWNpT7nJE?t=747
Thank you to Barnet Council for connecting us and for everyone involved for your help!
A huge thank you to Volunteers on Wheels, Human Appeal in Bounds Green, Aytac Food in East London, City Harvest in Acton, Go Dharmic, AirX, Barnet Council and Barnet Food Hub.
