Rozerin's Work Experience Day Two: Work in the YBF Office
It was time for me to do my second day of work experience with the Young Barnet Foundation, and I was ready to leave my house and get going. However, unlike yesterday, I got to go in at 10.30am, which meant that I could get some more time to prepare.
I managed to get ready whilst I consuming a bowl of cereal, and before I knew it, it was time to leave and meet the team once again. I had always seen offices in movies and walked passed them a few times, although I had never worked in an office outside of school so I was looking forward to discovering how it functioned.
Once I had reached my destination I was welcomed in and greeted by the team. I had seen the office during my interview there, but it felt even more homelier now that there was more people inside and working. Pete introduced me to the team once again, explaining their roles within the organisation and what everyone does. He then gave a clear brief of what I was expected to do along with a timetable and later showed me around. It was a comfortable environment to work in, everyone seemed busy yet relaxed, they seemed more like family members than colleagues.
My first task was to write review of the day the meeting took place. I found this slightly difficult to begin with as I was so used to analysing and writing about other people’s work rather than writing my own. At first sight the task seemed a little challenging but once I got started it was a lot simpler than I made it out to be.
I enjoyed the fact that the office was so flexible, it made it a lot easier to get to know everyone better and make conversation, it was also helpful that I could work at my own pace.
By the time I finished the review and had my lunch I was ready to begin the next task. Emma taught me how to make gifs using YouTube. That truly caught my interest. As someone who has been using YouTube their entire life, I had no idea you could make gifs using it, so I felt enthusiastic to make some. Emma gave me a quick tutorial then let me explore all its function. The gifs had an important function too, Emma gave me a quick explanation as to why and how it will be used for their twitter page gifs make tweets more relatable and approachable. The concept was quite simple to understand as the world of gifs and memes has undoubtedly expanded.
I managed to make several gifs out of the short video containing the Young Barnet Foundation, I even experimented a little using the stickers provided by YouTube. I must say it was a lot of fun and I would recommend anyone looking to spend some time enjoying themselves to make gifs.
My final task was to write up the answers to the questions asked on Monday. It was a longer task, but it helped me breakdown everything I had learnt during the meeting, it served as an equivalent of revision. Due to the quantity of answers and questions I never got to finish the task but this just meant that I had to learn how to manage my time the next day.
Overall, everyone was very supportive when I needed help and they knew how to make their work fun, the greatest example of this is probably Jan who made sure she kept everyone’s spirit high by singing. I was even given some very good advice. During my free time Emma and Sara showed me a few websites and organisations offering youths some experiences in sectors such as politics since that’s something I take interest in.
