Exposure secures funding from Young Barnet Foundation to engage young people with local employers
Exposure is delighted to be among ten local charities selected for funding by the Young Barnet Foundation, in the first round of their Space 2 Grow Children and Young People’s Fund.
The grant will allow us to run a new project in Barnet called ‘I’m Inspired’, which uses media as a means to connect young people to local employers. It will run alongside a similar project in Haringey, funded by Big Lottery Awards for All and Haringey Council.
‘I’m Inspired’ gives local youngsters the chance to explore, understand and report on the realities of the world of work by interviewing successful professionals in various sectors about:
what their job entails;
their education, training and experience;
the path taken and dedication needed to achieve success;
the advice and guidance they would give to young people looking to enter their profession;
what they look for in an employee.
Participants will use these interviews to create a number of articles plus a short film, which will be published on Exposure’s website to inform other young people thinking about their future careers.
Many young people have unrealistic expectations of career paths, or are unaware of opportunities. A City & Guilds survey last year found that 14-19 year-olds across the UK were aware of just a fifth of existing occupations.
Exposure aims to broaden young people’s understanding of the job market while they work towards a tangible project. We will seek interviewees in Barnet from a range of sectors including retail, catering, IT, media, hospitality, accountancy, banking, manufacturing and charity.
Young participants will be supported to:
identify and contact local professionals to request an interview;
prepare, schedule, and record interviews;
transcribe and edit material, ensuring content is engaging to a young audience, as well as creating, sourcing and manipulating appropriate accompanying images, graphics, visual and audio effects;
share their work widely with friends and classmates using social media.
The work produced will be made available as a learning resource to thousands of young people across Barnet, through established and safe networks, including local schools, colleges and statutory provision.
“This is a great opportunity for young people to get first-hand insight into a particular industry while developing practical media skills and building self-confidence”, said Anna Patton, who is coordinating the project.
On completion, beneficiaries will be encouraged to be proactive in developing their own career paths, whether re-engaging in education with renewed focus or applying for specific training or apprenticeships, with greater clarity and understanding of what to expect and what is expected of them.
